The love test

One day at Sunday School, we were given an exercise that is still so very vivid and relevant to me. We were studying the passage of love – 1 Corinthians 13:4 – 7.

Here’s how it I split it up:

- Love is patient.
- Love is kind.
- Love does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
- Love is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
- Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
- Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

And we were asked to replace the word love with our own names.
Oh no! My name would not fit.

It still remains a challenge after so many years. Yet, every once in a while, I do this ‘love test’ to gauge how far I’ve come.

Back some years ago; my husband was Catholic. I was not. My childeren attended the Catholic school. I met with the priest for study. I told him that the only commandent that bothered me was, "Love those as you love yourself." He said that I did not have to love WHAT they did, but to wish them no harm. I am not a Catholic, not really anything.. just a Christian. That commandment also says.. love yourself. Blessings, Janie Marie

Hi Betty,

Actually you've quoted one of my favorite phrases - God is good. :-) That's one of the foundations that holds me up no matter how bad the storm. Yes, it's His goodness that keeps us going. He knows, and am I thankful for that! :-)

Hey Janie!

Good to hear from you! Yes, I know what you mean and the gentle way you've said that - that's what warms my heart. Thanks. It's a struggle at times but I know soon there will be a day when it will cease to be a struggle. Bless you!
